Most Sydney airport hotels sit in Mascot, a few minutes from the terminals by road. Whether you can walk, and whether a shuttle is free, changes what a room really costs. Three things decide it: which side of the airport you fly from, whether the shuttle is free or charged per person, and whether it is running at your hour.
Which side you fly from comes first
Terminal 1 (international) and Terminals 2 and 3 (domestic) are on opposite sides of the airfield and you cannot walk between them. A hotel that is a walk from one side is a transfer from the other. See getting between the terminals for the free Terminal Transfer Bus and the train.
The ways to reach your terminal
| Cost | Runs | Good to know | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk | Nothing | Any time | Domestic side: several hotels are 8 to 15 minutes on foot. International side: one hotel is inside the terminal and one is a short walk |
| Hotel shuttle | Free at some hotels, charged at others | Set hours, often about 05:00 to 23:00 | Some need a time slot booked ahead |
| Shared shuttle | About $12 per person each way (forum report, July 2026) | About 05:00 to 23:00 | Not run by the hotels. Serves many Mascot hotels |
| Free Terminal Transfer Bus | Nothing | About every 15 minutes, roughly 05:30 to 22:30 | Links the two sides only, not hotels |
| Taxi or rideshare | On the meter, per car | Any time | The fallback outside shuttle hours |
Walk
On the international side, Aerotel is inside the terminal and Rydges is a short walk, counted at 181 steps by the airport. There is nothing to pay, nothing to book and no timetable.
On the domestic side, several hotels are an on-foot trip of roughly 8 to 15 minutes, depending on whose figure you trust: ibis budget, Mantra, ibis, Stamford Plaza and Pullman. Walk times are mostly one listing's estimate, so treat them as a guide and allow more with bags or children.
Hotel shuttle
Some hotels run their own shuttle. Moxy runs one about every 20 minutes between both sets of terminals and Mascot station, booked by time slot. Crowne Plaza Airport lists a daily shuttle from 5am to 11pm and asks you to book ahead. Others, such as Novotel, charge. Always ask three things when you book: is it free, is it per person, and what are the first and last runs.
Shared shuttle
A separate shuttle company serves a long list of Mascot hotels, including Novotel, Rydges, ibis, Mantra, Pullman and Stamford. It is not run by the hotels. Forum posters in July 2026 put the fare at about $12 a person each way and the hours at roughly 05:00 to 23:00. Some said you cannot book the airport-to-hotel run and have to wait at a set point, while the hotel books the other direction. Reports on how punctual it is vary.
Taxi and rideshare
A taxi costs the same for one person or four and runs at any hour, which makes it the fallback before the shuttle starts and after it stops. For a family of four it is often cheaper than paying per person on a shuttle both ways.
What this means when you compare hotels
- Add the transfer to the room rate. A hotel with a charged shuttle costs more than its room rate suggests, and doubles if you return to the same hotel.
- Count heads. Per-person fares add up quickly for a family.
- Check the clock. For a flight before about 05:00, or a landing after about 23:00, only walking and taxis are certain.
- A walk is not always the dear option. On the domestic side, ibis budget and ibis are among the lowest-priced stays on our list, and both are walkable.
Our short lists work the transfer out for each terminal. For the international side see Terminal 1, and for the domestic side Terminals 2 and 3.
