Showers, luggage storage and somewhere to rest at Sydney Airport

The short answer: There are free showers at Terminal 1, luggage storage at all three terminals and a booked quiet room at Terminal 1, but no sleeping areas, and the terminals close overnight. For a proper rest you need a hotel or a lounge, so plan that before you land.

Last checked · How we check

Sydney Airport has what you need for a few hours: showers on the international side, luggage storage, charging, a small booked quiet room at Terminal 1 and lounges you can pay to enter. It does not have anywhere to sleep, and it is not open all night. If you have a long wait or an early flight, that decides your plan.

The terminals close overnight

Sydney Airport has a curfew and the terminals close overnight. The airport lists Terminal 1 as open from 3:00am to 11:00pm. One third-party guide puts the domestic terminals' closed period at 11:00pm to 4:00am, which we have not confirmed. If that is right, you cannot wait inside overnight, and a bed nearby matters more than it does at an airport that stays open. Confirm the hours with Sydney Airport on the day.

Showers

A third-party guide lists free showers on the international side, airside near several gates and also on the landside on Level 3. Bring your own towel and toiletries. It does not give opening hours, and it confirms none for the domestic terminals.

Lounges are the easier way to a shower. Several international lounges have them, and some sell entry at the door. The Plaza Premium lounges and The House are examples. Prices and hours vary by lounge and by how long you stay, so check before you rely on one.

Luggage storage

Smarte Carte is reported to run luggage storage at all three terminals. These are the locations and hours given by one guide:

Terminal Where Hours
Terminal 1 International arrivals level, Exit A 7:00am to 8:00pm
Terminal 2 Domestic departures, near Gate 49 7:00am to 9:00pm
Terminal 3 Domestic arrivals level 5:00am to 10:00pm

None of them is available overnight, and we have no prices. Storage matters most if you plan to leave the airport and your bags are not checked through. See the city layover guide.

A quiet room at Terminal 1

Terminal 1 has a quiet room on the departures level, after security and border control. It is a low-stimulation space designed with Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia), and priority goes to neurodivergent travellers and anyone who needs a quiet space for their wellbeing. Access is open to all passengers, and the rules are strict:

  • Booking is essential. Book online ahead of time or scan the QR code at the door, subject to availability. It is free, and you get a PIN to enter.
  • Up to four people at a time, and group visits are not suitable.
  • Keep visits to 45 minutes or less.
  • Water only. No eating or drinking anything else, and it is not for socialising, playing or leisure.
  • No announcements. Flight information is on screens only, so watch your boarding time.

That makes it a place to settle before a flight, not somewhere to wait out a long gap. The airport's own page does not mention sleeping.

Somewhere to sleep

The terminals have no designated sleeping areas, and the lounges are not set up for sleeping. If you need to lie down:

  • A hotel inside the terminal. Aerotel is inside Terminal 1 and sells rooms by the hour as well as overnight. It is the only hotel inside a terminal.
  • A day room near the terminal. Rydges and Mantra are reported to sell day rooms. Check price and hours with the hotel.
  • A lounge. You get a seat, food and drink, Wi-Fi and charging. Some have showers.
  • A hotel for the night. Our short lists compare them: Terminal 1 overnight connection and Terminals 2 and 3 overnight connection.

Planning for a long wait

  1. Decide whether you will stay inside or leave. The long layover lists help.
  2. If you are leaving, store your bags before you go and note the closing time.
  3. If you need to sleep, book it ahead. Nothing in the terminal will do it for you.
  4. Remember the terminals close. If you land late or fly very early, the question is where you spend the closed hours.
