Where to stay on an overnight connection at Melbourne Airport Terminal 2

The short answer: Stay at PARKROYAL. It is joined to Terminal 2 by a covered skybridge, so the gap goes on sleep, not on a transfer. With a long gap, Holiday Inn's 24-hour shuttle costs less.

Who it suits
Most overnight connections, especially gaps of eight hours or less.
Why we would choose it
A covered skybridge from Terminal 2, about two minutes on foot. There is nothing to book or wait for in either direction.
The compromise
Usually the most expensive airport hotel here, and you pay for a full night however few hours you use.
Worth paying more?
On a short gap, usually yes: every minute saved on the transfer is a minute of sleep.

Who it suits
Gaps of ten hours or more, when the saving matters more than the minutes.
Why we would choose it
Per the hotel, a free shuttle runs 24 hours, and the hotel is about five minutes' walk through the car park if you prefer.
The compromise
Sources disagree on whether the shuttle is free. Confirm it before you rely on it after a long flight.
Worth paying more?
Over PARKROYAL only when the gap is long and the shuttle is confirmed.

Why we would choose it
A hotel opened in 2024, with a pool, sauna and gym, about ten to fifteen minutes' walk from Terminal 2 by one forum post.
The compromise
The walk time rests on a single source, and the shuttle terms are unconfirmed.
Worth paying more?
Only with a long gap and the time to use the pool. For a short one, stay on the skybridge.
