Where to stay near Los Angeles International Airport

The short answer: No LAX hotel is a sensible walk, even the ones that look close on a map. Stay on the Century Boulevard corridor and plan on a free hotel shuttle, which picks up on the Upper/Departures Level at the red pylons. Qantas flies from the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Travellers report waits of about 20 minutes and slower service overnight, so confirm your hotel's shuttle hours before an early flight or a late arrival.

Not sure which terminal?

Your booking confirmation names it. If you only know the airline, this is where each one mostly flies from. Airlines do move, so check before you book a room.

How LAX is laid out

What about the layout decides where you should sleep.

  1. Nine terminals around a horseshoeTerminals 1 to 8 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT, also called Terminal B) sit around a loop road. Inside security, some terminals are joined by walkways, but the walks can be long and not every link works the same way. Check LAX's terminal map for your route.
  2. Qantas uses the Tom Bradley International TerminalQantas says its flights arrive and depart from TBIT, and you clear customs and immigration in Los Angeles. TBIT is being modernised, with work due to finish before the 2028 Olympic Games. Check your ticket for the terminal.
  3. Nothing is walkableSeveral hotels on Century Boulevard look close on a map. Travellers describe the walk as unpleasant, with fast roads and construction. Treat every hotel here as a shuttle or a ride.
  4. Hotel shuttles and rideshare pick up in different placesHotel shuttles use the Upper/Departures Level, at red pylons marked for hotel and private parking shuttles. Taxis and ride apps pick up from LAX-it, east of Terminal 1, reached by a free LAX-it shuttle. The Hilton's Booking.com page says its shuttle collects on the Lower/Arrivals Level only, so ask your hotel where to stand.
  5. The people mover is not open yetThe Automated People Mover (SkyLink) has missed one opening date after another. Reports differ on the next date, so check LAWA before you plan around it. Until it opens, shuttle buses and LAX-it carry the load, so allow extra time around terminal traffic.
  6. Shuttle times are longer than they lookHotels list free shuttles every 15 to 35 minutes. Travellers report waits of about 20 minutes, a 10 to 15 minute ride depending on terminal and traffic, and slower service overnight. These are traveller reports, not hotel timetables.

The kinds of LAX stay

Almost every hotel around the airport falls into one of these. Knowing which you want is most of the decision.

Shuttle

A Century Boulevard hotel with a free shuttle

The Hyatt Regency, Sheraton Gateway, Westin, Hilton, Marriott, Courtyard, Hyatt Place and Homewood Suites sit along Century Boulevard, a few minutes by road from the terminals. All list a free airport shuttle on Booking.com. Many say 24 hours, but the hours come from Booking.com and third-party listings, so confirm them for your flight. Best for early flights, late arrivals and most families.

On request

A hotel in El Segundo, with a shuttle on request

Embassy Suites LAX South is on Imperial Avenue in El Segundo, about a mile from the airport. Its shuttle runs by request only, so you phone to be collected. Best for a mid-morning flight and a family that wants breakfast included.

Drive

A park, sleep and fly package

Some hotels bundle a night with parking and a shuttle. The package only pays off on a long trip or a long drive to LAX, so compare the total before you book. Best for a long drive in and a very early flight.
