Where to rest on a long layover at Dubai Terminal 1

The short answer: Under about eight hours, rest airside in a Sleepover pod. From ten hours, a landside hotel with a pool is better value if you may leave the airport.

Who it suits
Layovers of six to ten hours where you want a bed and no immigration.
Why we would choose it
Airside in Terminal 3, a 6, 8 or 10 hour block for one adult. Nothing to clear and nothing to catch.
The compromise
A pod rather than a hotel room, one adult per pod, and the price per person is close to a landside hotel for two.
Worth paying more?
For up to eight hours, yes. For longer, a landside hotel is cheaper if you may leave the airport.

Who it suits
Layovers of ten hours or more with a family, when you want a pool and gardens.
Why we would choose it
Booking.com says a complimentary shuttle serves Terminals 1 and 3. A large hotel with a year-round outdoor pool, gardens and a spa at one of the lowest summer rates.
The compromise
Older decor than the newer brands, and we could not confirm the shuttle hours. You must be able to leave the airport.
Worth paying more?
Worth it for a long layover or a family. Not for a short one.

Who it suits
Layovers of ten hours or more when you want a real rest, and may leave the airport.
Why we would choose it
The hotel advertises a free airport shuttle. A five-star in landscaped gardens with five pools, and rooms that look over the airport.
The compromise
It costs about twice the budget hotels and the shuttle timetable is unconfirmed.
Worth paying more?
Yes for a long layover when you want to sleep well. No for a short gap.
