Canggu and Uluwatu are both popular, and both are a long way from the airport by Bali standards. Neither is hard to reach. The trouble is the time of day you try.
Canggu
Canggu is about 20 km from the airport. Off-peak the drive is usually 35 to 50 minutes. At the evening peak, from about 4pm to 8pm, one guide says it can stretch to an hour or more. The slow points are Sunset Road, Jalan Petitenget and the Kerobokan intersection.
A taxi from the counter costs roughly IDR 225,000 to 350,000 (about A$22 to 35), depending on the source and the part of Canggu. A pre-booked transfer is usually a bit more. Agree the price, and what it includes, before you get in.
Uluwatu
Uluwatu is on the Bukit peninsula, around 20 to 25 km from the airport by road. Normal traffic gives you about 40 to 60 minutes, and one guide warns it can take up to 1.5 hours near sunset. Most of the delay is at Jimbaran, where the traffic funnels through a few intersections.
Prices vary a lot. One guide gives roughly IDR 250,000 to 400,000 (about A$25 to 40) and a 2026 transfer company lists IDR 560,000 (about A$56) for a standard car. Check the counter's posted rate or the app quote, and compare.

Tips that save the most time
- Choose the hour, not the car. A flight landing at 11am gets you to Canggu in under an hour. A flight at 5pm can double it.
- Avoid the sunset window. Both routes are worst from about 4pm to 8pm.
- Check the fare before you leave the terminal. Use the posted counter rate, or a Bluebird taxi on the meter, or an app price you have seen before booking.
- Allow extra in the July and August peak and over Christmas and New Year.
When to sleep near the airport first
If you land in the late afternoon or evening, or after a long overnight flight, a night close to the airport may be easier than a two-hour crawl to Uluwatu. You can head off the next morning when the roads are clear. The same is true on the way home: for an early international flight, a room near the airport takes the long morning drive out.
