Bali airport traffic, and when to stay near it

The short answer: Stay near the airport if you fly early, fly out in the late afternoon from Seminyak or Canggu, or cannot afford to miss the flight. Guides put the drive from Kuta at 10 to 15 minutes, Seminyak at 20 to 40 and Canggu at 35 to 50, and these can roughly double between about 4pm and 7:30pm. The closest hotels are in Tuban: Novotel is nearest the terminals, with Hilton Garden Inn and HARRIS Tuban a short drive away.

Last checked · How we check

Bali's airport is close to the southern beaches, but the roads around it are not. The same drive can take 15 minutes at midday and more than an hour at the evening peak. That is why many travellers choose to sleep near the airport the night before a flight.

How long the drive takes

These are rough guides from transfer companies and travel sites, not measured times. Traffic is the main variable.

From Off-peak At the evening peak
Kuta 10 to 15 minutes Longer
Legian 20 to 30 minutes Longer
Seminyak 20 to 40 minutes Up to 45 to 90 minutes
Canggu 35 to 50 minutes Longer

The worst window is the late afternoon, from about 4pm to 7:30pm. That is when people head home along Sunset Road, and journeys can roughly double. The main choke point is the Simpang Siur interchange, where traffic from Kuta, the airport and Denpasar all merges.

When the traffic matters most

  • A morning flight. The roads are quieter early, but you still have to cross the peninsula in the dark with luggage. A hotel near the airport shortens the morning to a few minutes.
  • A late-afternoon or evening flight from Seminyak or Canggu. Your drive lands in the worst window. Leaving early or sleeping near the airport protects you.
  • A tight connection. If you cannot afford to miss the flight, remove the road from the plan.
  • A late arrival. After a long flight, a hotel a few minutes from the terminal beats an hour in a car.
  • A peak-season trip. In July, August and the Christmas to New Year break, roads and airport queues are at their worst, so extra time near the airport is worth more.

The busiest times of year

Bali's airport is busiest in the northern summer and over the Christmas and New Year holidays. July is the peak: airport management reported about 2.3 million passengers in July 2025, and August 2025 handled 2.33 million, with 1 August the busiest day at 79,810 passengers. The Christmas to New Year break is the other surge, roughly 20 December to 5 January, when overseas visitors escaping winter and Indonesian families on holiday arrive together. One earlier count put a single peak day in December 2018 at 74,611 passengers.

We have not found measured road or queue times for those periods. Travel guides say the island is at capacity then, immigration and baggage lines are longest, and the drive out can take far longer than usual. If you are travelling in July, August or the Christmas break, give the airport more time than you would in a quiet month.

If you are coming from further away

The further you are from the airport, the more a slow drive costs you. From Seminyak, Canggu or Ubud, a delay of an hour is not unusual at the evening peak, and in a busy season it can be worse. The sensible plan for a morning flight, or an evening flight from the north of the island, is to spend the last night close to the airport. Tuban hotels take the road out of the equation, and the cost of one night is often less than a missed flight.

Where to stay near the airport

One hotel is inside the airport, and the rest are in Tuban, on the Kuta side. The details below come from the hotels' own pages and booking sites. We have not confirmed them by phone or tested the routes. Room rates come from a twelve-date Booking.com sample on 23 October 2026: about AUD 48 to 59 a night at HARRIS, 71 to 102 at Hilton Garden Inn and 105 to 128 at Novotel.

  • PassGo Digital Airport Hotel is a capsule hotel on level 2 of the International Terminal, a few steps from arrivals, so there is no transfer at all. A capsule sleeps one adult, the bathrooms are shared, and a capsule costs about AUD 43 a night. Check-in is listed as 2pm to midnight, so tell them if you are landing later.
  • Novotel Bali Ngurah Rai Airport is inside the airport compound. The hotel says it is a 2 to 5 minute walk from the International Terminal and 5 to 10 from Domestic, on a covered, level walkway you reach after immigration and customs. Follow the Airport Hotel signs; some guests found them unclear, and one found the walk dim and quiet late at night. The full buffet starts at 6am, but the hotel can provide an early spread or a packed box for earlier flights.
  • Hilton Garden Inn Bali Ngurah Rai Airport is about 500 m away by the hotel's own figure, and about five minutes by car. Its shuttle is IDR 125,000 per vehicle each way, about AUD 13 for up to two people. It runs 24 hours on request, so contact the hotel to arrange it, ideally a day ahead.
  • HARRIS Hotel Kuta Tuban Bali is about five minutes by car. The hotel's Instagram and several booking sites list a free 24-hour airport shuttle. The hotel says it runs 24/7 on an hourly departure and needs booking ahead, so message it at least a day before with your flight time.
  • Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali is a beachfront resort about ten minutes from the terminals, with two pools, a kids' pool and a free airport shuttle listed by IHG and Booking.com, running about 5:30am to 1am. Rooms are about AUD 137 to 199.

The two terminals

Bali has a domestic terminal in the older building and an international terminal in the newer L-shaped building. They are within walking distance of each other, separated by the Festival Plaza. Novotel's own page gives the same 5 to 10 minute walk to both, so the choice of terminal does not change which hotel is best. We have not measured the walk between the terminals.

Closed for Nyepi

The airport closes for Nyepi, Bali's day of silence, each year. It runs from 6am to 6am, flights stop, and visitors are asked to stay in their hotels. Hotels do not allow check-in or check-out that day. In 2027 Nyepi is expected on 8 March, though one source gives 9 March, so confirm the date from an official source. If you are flying out just before or after it, the safest plan is to be at a hotel near the airport the night before, not crossing the island on the morning of a closure.

What we would book

  • Solo traveller, layover or tight morning: PassGo, in the International Terminal.
  • Family with a free day: Holiday Inn Resort Baruna.
  • Early flight, shortest morning: Novotel. A covered walk with no road in between, and a packed breakfast on request.
  • Early flight, value: HARRIS Tuban, using the free shuttle if the hotel confirms your pick-up time.
  • Late arrival or a family stay: Hilton Garden Inn or Novotel, for the pool and the quick ride.
  • Staying in Seminyak or Canggu: Leave early, or move to Tuban for the last night. Avoid leaving between about 4pm and 7:30pm.
