Western Sydney Airport began passenger flights on 25 October 2026. The next day, ABC News reported travellers who did not realise their flight was landing there.
One passenger flew Jetstar from Melbourne expecting Sydney Airport. Her boarding pass said "west airport", which she did not recognise. Her car was at the other airport, so she was stuck in Western Sydney and estimated about two hours to get across to Sydney Airport. Another passenger on an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland read "Western Sydney" as Western Australia, where he meant to go.
Check before you fly
- Look at the airport name and code on your booking confirmation and boarding pass. Western Sydney is WSI. Sydney Airport at Mascot is SYD.
- Do not trust "Sydney" alone. Both airports serve Sydney, and a short label on a boarding pass may not make clear which one you are using.
- Plan your pickup, parking and hotel around the right airport. Cars, transfers and hotel shuttles do not cross between the two.
- Allow for the trip if you get it wrong. There is no train at Western Sydney Airport yet. The metro is not open, so you rely on the road, a rideshare or the free WSI Link bus to St Marys station.
If you are on the wrong side of Sydney
Ask your airline at the gate or on arrival. Then compare a rideshare against the bus and train. If you are stuck overnight, the stays near Western Sydney Airport are the closest beds.
