If you are flying out of Rome early, the choice is a last night in the city or a night at the airport. Rome is an easy trip to Fiumicino, so this is not a clear call. It depends on your flight time and how you feel about the morning.

Why people stay in Rome
It is your last night in Rome. If you want dinner out and a walk, a central room is better. For a mid-morning flight or later, you can sleep normally and take the train.
Why the airport wins for a very early flight
- The first trains start late. Trenitalia is reported to list the first Leonardo Express from Termini at about 4:50am. Check-in for a flight at 7:00 may open before you can arrive.
- A taxi is the fallback. That costs more, and you rely on one driver.
- You sleep longer. A hotel you can walk to turns a 4:00 alarm into a 5:30 one.
How the train compares
| Way | Takes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Leonardo Express | About 32 minutes | EUR 14 per adult, first from Termini about 4:50am |
| Taxi | Varies with traffic | Fixed fare to the centre, ask the figure |
We would not rule out the train. Rome's traffic is not the main risk. Missing the first train is.
A rule of thumb
- Flight before about 08:00: stay at Fiumicino.
- Flight from mid-morning on: a night in Rome and the Leonardo Express is fine.
- Flight between the two: a late dinner in Rome, then a taxi, or return to the airport for the night.
