London to New Zealand Stopover: Does Singapore Help Jet Lag?

The short answer: A Singapore stopover splits the London to New Zealand time shift into roughly 8 hours and then 4 to 5, and gives you a proper night's sleep in the middle. It will not remove jet lag, and the second leg is long, but most travellers arrive in Auckland less worn out than after a single push.

London to New Zealand is about as far as you can fly. The time difference is so large that jet lag is close to guaranteed, which is exactly why breaking the trip is worth thinking about. A Singapore stopover will not make jet lag disappear, but it can make the arrival much easier on your body.

Why this trip is harder than London to Australia

Your body clock runs a little longer than 24 hours, which makes it easier to stay up late than to fall asleep early. Flying east asks you to go to sleep earlier than your body wants to, so eastbound trips tend to feel worse.

New Zealand adds a twist. The time difference from London is 11 to 13 hours depending on the season. A 13 hour shift east is the same as an 11 hour shift west, so your body clock may not know which way to adjust. Some sleep researchers point out that a shift this large can leave you partly adjusted in the wrong direction. You arrive tired, in the wrong part of your body's day, after a journey that is well over 24 hours door to door.

How a Singapore stopover splits the shift

London to Singapore is roughly 13 hours in the air. Singapore to Auckland is roughly 10. Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines both fly Singapore to Auckland non-stop.

Season London to Singapore Singapore to Auckland
UK on GMT, New Zealand on daylight time (late Oct to late Mar) +8 hours +5 hours
UK on BST, New Zealand on standard time (early Apr to late Sep) +7 hours +4 hours

The weeks either side of these dates fall between the two rows, because the clock changes do not line up. Check your own travel dates.

The split is lopsided compared with Australia. Most of the shift happens on the first leg, and the second leg is a long one. That limits what a stopover can do for your body clock. What it does very well is break up the fatigue.

What the stopover actually does for you

1. Real sleep in a real bed. Airline sleep is broken sleep. A proper night in a dark room is often the biggest single recovery boost.

2. A head start on the new time zone. You will not fully adjust in a night or two, but you start moving your body clock forward in a manageable step.

3. Daylight at the right time. Light is the strongest signal for resetting your body clock. A morning walk in Singapore gives you a controlled dose of it.

4. A shorter final push. You leave Singapore with roughly 10 hours to go instead of more than 20 on your first day of travel.

How long should you stay?

  • A few hours to 24 hours. Enough for a sleep and a shower. The right choice if you are connecting and cannot or do not want to leave the airport.
  • 2 to 3 nights. Long enough to adjust properly, see some of Singapore and arrive in New Zealand genuinely rested. This is where the jet lag benefit is strongest.
  • A week or more. More of a holiday than a jet lag strategy, but a lovely one.

Where to stay at Changi Airport

Changi makes a short stopover easy, but the key detail is whether you can leave the airport.

  • Airside transit hotels (no immigration). If you are connecting and not entering Singapore, you stay in the transit area. Changi Transit Hotel has airside rooms in Terminals 1 and 3 and, according to the airport, takes over the Terminal 2 hotel from 3 November 2026 (details here). Ambassador Transit Hotel in Terminal 2 is also airside until that changeover. You need an onward boarding pass, and rooms are booked in hourly blocks.
  • Landside hotels (clear immigration first). Crowne Plaza Changi Airport is a short walk from Terminal 3 and next to Jewel. YOTELAIR is inside Jewel, a few minutes' walk from Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Both suit an overnight stay, and both offer day use for shorter breaks.
  • Heading into the city. For a 2 to 3 night stopover you will probably clear immigration and stay in the city or nearby, with the airport only a short ride away.

Changi's Terminals 1, 2 and 3 connect on foot and by a free Skytrain. Terminal 4 is separate and uses a free shuttle bus. Our Singapore Changi airport hotel guide covers each option in detail.

Other stopover options

Singapore is not the only way to break the journey. Dubai and Doha are also common stopovers between London and New Zealand. For Auckland, the Gulf hubs generally leave a much longer second leg, so the split is more lopsided than Singapore's. Check current schedules and flight times for your dates.

Tips to get the most out of it

  1. Get outside in the morning. Bright daylight soon after you wake helps move your clock forward.
  2. Eat on local time. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at local hours reinforce the new schedule.
  3. Keep caffeine for the morning. A late coffee can cost you the night's sleep.
  4. Skip long naps. If you must nap, keep it short and early.
  5. Plan the second flight. Choose a departure that lets you sleep a full night first, rather than rushing straight back to the airport.

If you are thinking about melatonin or other aids, speak to your doctor first.

The honest caveat

A stopover does not remove jet lag. You still cross the same time zones, and with a 10 hour second flight you will arrive tired whatever you do. It also adds cost and time. For many people the trade is worth it, particularly families, anyone over 40, and anyone who lands in New Zealand and has to work, drive or attend an event straight away.

FAQ

Does a stopover really help with jet lag on the way to New Zealand? It can help by breaking the journey, giving you proper sleep and letting you start adjusting before you land. It does not eliminate jet lag.

How long should the stopover in Singapore be? Even a 12 to 24 hour break helps with fatigue. Two to three nights gives you more time to adjust.

Do I need to clear immigration at Changi? Only if you want to leave the transit area, including to use landside hotels such as Crowne Plaza or YOTELAIR. Check current entry requirements for your passport.

Is the Singapore stopover as helpful as it is for Australia? Slightly less for the body clock, because more of the shift is left for the second leg, but just as useful for sleep and recovery.
